In a recent episode of the 1st Optimal Podcast, we had the privilege of speaking with Shauna Teresa Butler, a health coach dedicated to helping women over 40 regain control of their health, build muscle, and unlock their best body. Shauna shared her inspiring journey, her insights on fitness, and how she empowers women to break through barriers and embrace their strength, both physically and mentally.
The Journey to Health
Shauna’s story begins with her personal struggle with fitness. Like many women, she spent hours in the gym, always focused on getting smaller and dieting. It wasn’t until she became a mother at 39 that her perspective shifted. With a new baby, she had to adjust her fitness routine, but this change turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Shauna’s focus shifted from just losing weight to training for health, longevity, and muscle, discovering that muscle is truly the “organ of longevity.”
“I started to train for health and muscle. The cherry on top was that it created the physique I had been chasing for decades,” Shauna shared.
At age 46, Shauna feels and looks better than she did at 26. Her story proves that with the right mindset and approach, it’s never too late to feel your best.
The Power of Working Smarter, Not Harder
One of the biggest lessons Shauna learned on her journey is the importance of working smarter, not harder. For years, she believed more hours in the gym and stricter calorie restrictions would get her the body she wanted. But as she embraced the idea of nourishing her body with the right foods and training with intention, she started seeing better results.
“Instead of training to be small and skinny, I started training for health and muscle,” Shauna explained. “By working with my metabolism instead of against it, I started to see progress while working out less.”
Shauna’s message to women is clear: don’t work harder, work smarter. Stop fighting your body and start aligning with it.
The Struggle With the Scale
For many women, the scale is a constant source of frustration. Shauna explains that while it’s natural to want to see numbers drop, focusing too much on the scale can prevent women from seeing real progress. Building muscle and changing body composition often leads to fluctuations in weight, but it’s important to understand that muscle weighs more than fat and takes up less space in the body.
“We need to stop focusing on the scale as the end-all-be-all,” Shauna said. “Instead, focus on building muscle and changing your body composition. That’s when you’ll truly start to see the benefits.”
The key is to focus on how you feel, how your body is changing, and your overall health—not just a number on the scale.
Building Muscle for Longevity
One of the most profound takeaways from the conversation is the importance of building muscle as you age. For women over 40, strength training is one of the best things they can do for their health. Muscle isn’t just for aesthetics, it’s essential for maintaining metabolism, improving insulin sensitivity, and promoting overall wellness.
“Muscle is the organ of longevity,” Shauna said. “When you have more muscle, you’re going to look smaller and feel healthier.”
Building a strong foundation of muscle is the key to better health, and it helps with everything from fat loss to improving bone density and metabolic function. Shauna’s approach to strength training isn’t about lifting the heaviest weights; it’s about lifting with intention, working with your body, and focusing on what really matters for long-term health.
Changing the Way Women See Themselves
One of the most powerful moments in the episode was when Shauna discussed how she helps women reframe their fitness journeys. Too many women, especially after 40, feel disconnected from their bodies and believe the best years are behind them. Shauna’s mission is to help women reconnect with their bodies, rebuild their strength, and embrace the changes that come with age.
“It’s not about looking like someone else or reaching a specific number,” Shauna said. “It’s about finding the best version of you, and that’s different for everyone. You can absolutely feel and look better than you did years ago, it’s all about aligning with your body and focusing on what really matters.”
Embracing the Long Game
Change doesn’t happen overnight. Shauna emphasizes that lasting transformation takes time. She encourages women to focus on the long-term picture rather than immediate results. Fitness is a journey, and the more you invest in it, the more you’ll see those small, consistent changes that add up over time.
“It’s a long game. But it’s absolutely worth it,” Shauna says. “Don’t count yourself out because of your age. You have so much potential left.”
The Importance of Consistency and Patience
Shauna’s story is proof that with patience, consistency, and the right mindset, incredible transformations are possible at any age. She reminds us that it’s not about perfection, it’s about progress. Whether you’re just starting or are already on your health journey, Shauna’s message is clear: you are capable of achieving your best body, no matter your age.
As Shauna shares, “Change is possible, and if I can do it, anyone can.”
