A calorie deficit is necessary for most forms of intentional weight loss.

But there is a difference between eating fewer calories and eating too few calories for your body, activity level, and nutritional needs.

If you recently started a weight-loss plan and now feel unusually tired, weak, irritable, cold, mentally foggy, or unable to recover from workouts, the problem may not be a lack of discipline.

Your calorie deficit may simply be too aggressive.

Reduced-calorie eating plans are a standard part of evidence-based weight management, but successful programs should still provide enough calories and nutrients to support your body’s needs. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) specifically describes safe weight-loss programs as including an eating plan based on the calories and nutrients an individual requires.

The goal should not be to eat as little as possible.

The goal is to create a sustainable calorie deficit while maintaining adequate nutrition, physical function, muscle mass, recovery, and quality of life.

7 Signs You May Be Undereating During Weight Loss

Fatigue alone does not prove that you are undereating. Sleep problems, anemia, thyroid disorders, infections, medications, stress, depression, and many other conditions can also cause persistent tiredness.

But when several of the following symptoms appear soon after substantially reducing food intake, your nutrition strategy deserves another look.

1. Your Energy Has Dropped Dramatically

Some adjustment can occur when calories are reduced, especially if your previous intake was high.

But feeling exhausted throughout the day is different.

You may notice that:

  • Getting through your workday feels harder.
